Dark Chocolate and My Dark Night of the Soul
Every genius is bound to taste insanity at some point on their path to greatness. For this House, that insanity, wrought in the fires of a new academic year and the waning daylight hours, set in on an unfortunate Saturday morning, much to the distress of my loved ones. Despite their consolations and kind words, I knew there was but one savior that could save me from this depressed damnation: a new hot chocolate. To the nearest novel chocolate store I went, tears like a nighttime mist clouding my vision, in search of salvation.
Thankfully, my salvation was secured at Gem Chocolates. Gem Chocolates, a local chocolatier, creates delectable hot chocolates for the charming neighborhood of Kerrisdale. My serving that day was a small size of their dark hot chocolate. This drink was crafted exactly to my expectations of any chocolate of quality: large blocks of chocolate were melted into heated milk, allowing for a flavorful and well-formed composition that immediately returned me to a sensible state of mind. Dearest reader, on everything that is honorable and kind, this was one of the most flavorful chocolates I have ever had the delight of experiencing, second only to the work of Koko Monk. It tasted exactly like a perfectly roasted dark chocolate. I have never before sampled such strong a preservation of flavor where seemingly not a morsel of sapidity was sacrificed to the diluting tendencies of bland milk. Even as I write this, my hands tremble with awe. A subtle sourness and fruit-like flavor, consistent with a cocoa bean that has been roasted to perfection, engulfed my senses in the most wonderful sensation. It was unlike the vanilla- and caramel-flavored cocoas that I have frequently indulged in prior to this. I can scarcely imagine what the chocolate itself tastes like if the less concentrated version was so delightful.
In my notebook, the remaining words I have not recorded here are simply the words “quite excellent”. Indeed, there is no better summary. I happily induct Gem Chocolates into Hot Chocolate Heaven. It provided me my salvation; how can it not attain its own?
